Michael Kopech has yet to throw a pitch in the MLB, yet has already made a name for himself. He was drafted 33rd overall in the 2014 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox. First he threw a three-ounce ball 110 MPH, which made waves around the league. To add to his popularity, he was part of a package that brought Chris Sale to the Red Sox, along with fellow top prospect Yoan Moncada, OF Luis Alexander Basabe, and RHP Victor Diaz.
Kopech entered the season as the #10 prospect according to MLB.com, and #11 prospect by Baseball America. He is known for being able to throw 100 MPH in his sleep. His problem is that he doesn’t know where the 100 MPH fastball is going. Kopech has a 7-7 record with a 3.70 ERA in 126.1 IP. He has 170 Ks to 60 BBs and an absurd 12.1 K/9 at the AAA level. Kopech is not having the best season, but is still showing his ability to get people out, and at this point the White Sox figure he is as ready as he’ll ever be.
Kopech will square off with the Twins’ ace Jose Berrios (11-8, 3.75 ERA) at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. This highly anticipated game will be at 8:10 PM ET. Michael Kopech will feature a previously mentioned blazing fastball, as well as a sweeping slider, and a change-up that has improved over his time in professional baseball.
