Saquon Barkley, Baker Mayfield look sharp in preseason opener

The top two picks in the 2018 NFL Draft squared off in East Rutherford in the preseason opener for the Browns and Giants on NFL Network. Barkley came into the game on the opening snap and wasted no time showing his athletic ability and ball-carrier vision, taking the ball for a 39-yard run.

Barkley would struggle the rest of the way and finish with a 5 carries for 43 yards. He proved that the keys to the backfield have already been handed to the former Penn State star and that he can play with the big boys. I am extremely excited to see Barkley in the NFL.

Baker Mayfield did not disappoint in his debut either. Tyrod Taylor would start the game and put pressure on Baker early, going 5/5 for 99 yards and a touchdown. His 2018 debut that was capped off by a 36 yard touchdown pass to tight-end David Njoku.

Mayfield, the Oklahoma Sooner Heisman winner and number one overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft did not back down to Tyrod. After a quick three-and-out where Mayfield was only allowed one pass attempt, Baker came out swinging. Upon getting the ball back, Baker led a fourteen-play, 72 yard drive capped off by a another David Njoku touchdown. He threw a beautiful ball in the back of the end zone into double coverage for the score:

Later in the game Mayfield would orchestrate a quick four-play, 76 yard drive that featured a 54 yard touchdown pass to Antonio Callaway, who had an incredible game but was accused of marijuana possession days ago. Mayfield threw a perfect pass to Callaway on a slant ensuring that the ball could only be caught by his receiver by putting it low:

Baker exited his debut 11/20 with 212 yards and TDs. He also had 3 rushes for 13 yards. Mayfield’s first drive showed his pocket mobility, accuracy, arm strength, and his overall ability to create plays and convert when needed. Here is every play from his first drive that is a must watch:
