Blake Snell currently leads the American League with a 2.09 ERA in 116 IP this season. He has 132 Strikeouts (8th in the AL) and only 44 walks. He has a 12-2 record with a Tampa Bay Rays team that sits 16 games back of first in the American League East and 11 behind a Wild Card spot. As of this moment he is not headed to Washington D.C. for the 2018 All-Star Game. While he is likely to make it by the final roster when it is all said and done, this is still absolutely ridiculous. Verlander will be inactive for the game as he is starting the Sunday before the break which all but ensures Snell will get in but does not make this acceptable.
Trevor Bauer is 8-6 with a 2.45 ERA yet he made it as the second pitcher in the Indians rotation on the All-Star staff. Cleveland is 10 games over .500 yet Bauer is only 8-6. I am not saying Bauer should not be in the All-Star Game but the fact that he got in over Snell makes no sense. We should be debating whether Snell or Severino should START the All-Star game, not figuring out how Snell could still make it. Chris Archer said it best: “BLAKE SNELL IS AN ALL-STAR, not an alternate, replacement, or backup.” Right now, Snell has my vote to start the All-Star game and win the Cy-Young if it ended today.
